Why does NOMOQ put a batch number on my can, and can it be removed?

NOMOQ prints a Batch Code on all cans as part of a legally required traceability system in line with Food Safety regulations. This Batch Code is mandatory and cannot be removed.

1. NOMOQ Batch Code

In addition to the Batch Code, the name NOMOQ is also printed on the can for the same traceability reasons. This practice follows industry standards and is common among major can manufacturers such as Ardagh.

❇️ Batch Code and sample ID

During the sampling phase, a Sample ID is printed on the can.
Before mass production, this Sample ID is automatically converted into the final Batch Code. The Batch Code is therefore the production equivalent of the Sample ID and serves as the reference for full traceability.

🔄 Position and orientation on the can

As a general rule, NOMOQ prints the Batch Code:

  • With a minimal font size

  • Close to the GTIN / barcode or the ingredients list

However, customers have flexibility during the sample approval process:

  • The position of the Batch Code on the can can be agreed

  • The orientation can be vertical or horizontal

To help customers anticipate and integrate the Batch Code correctly into their artwork, NOMOQ provides official can design templates, available here: https://www.nomoq.com/cans#templates

There is one regulatory constraint:

  • A minimum distance of 10 mm must be respected between the end of print (rim side) and the Batch Code

👉 Summary

  • The Batch Code is legally required and not optional

  • It ensures full product traceability and food safety compliance

  • NOMOQ works with customers to place the code in a way that best fits the design, within regulatory limits

If you have specific design constraints, we recommend addressing the Batch Code placement early during the sampling phase to ensure smooth approval.

2. AMP Daycode

The AMP daycode is a production code applied by Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) during can manufacturing before cans are delivered to NOMOQ.

🔆 Why is it sometimes visible?

Visibility depends on your design:

  • Full ink coverage → usually not visible
  • Metallic effects  → may become visible through the aluminium

This is a physical result of the substrate and print process, not a defect.

⛔ Can NOMOQ remove or orientate this code?

  • Removal is not possible (applied upstream by AMP)
  • Orientation or positioning is not supported

Although positioning was explored in the past (e.g. behind the barcode), it has been discontinued because:

  • It is not reliable at industrial scale
  • It introduces production instability and quality risks

👉 What should I consider when designing my artwork?

If your design includes Metallic effects you should expect that the AMP daycode may be visible.
